Gun Control Is About Control, Not Safety  

This is a common fear tactic to persuade people into resisting measures that seek to curb gun violence.

Nations like Australia have effectively kept firearms out of the hands of civilians after a mass shooting occurred. And yet, the government has not abused this in order to oppress its citizens through violent means.

Even if the United States did not seek further regulation of firearms, the military would effectively crush any resistance to tyrannical martial law. Assault rifles (defined as rifles that have fully automatic firing capabilities) are standard issue for the military in the form of the M4A1 carbine. Civilians can easily purchase semi-automatic firearms, but would endure heavy financial burdens and a large amount of paperwork in order to legally own a full-auto rifle or handgun. This was accomplished in the 1930s to effectively legislate away the rights of gangs to own submachine guns like the Thompson .45 (also known as the “Tommy Gun”). Semi-automatic firearms vs. fully-automatic firearms is a win for the latter every time.

In short, there is no purpose for owning guns as a means of “resisting government” when the government possesses such superior firepower that any resistance would be crushed almost instantly.
